September and October

Scarecrows

Meaford calls itself the Scarecrow Capital of Ontario. Because of the farmland that runs in every direction out of town. For two months of the year they stand along the green and up the street, and then they come down again.

Schubird

Said Shoo, bird.

A three foot bronze scarecrow, by Gunter Neumann, a local artist, unveiled in 2009. He is the one who does not come down in November.

There is a plaque underneath telling you to rub his right foot. It is for good luck, and for a happy return to Meaford.

Rub it. It costs nothing and it is the only thing on this website you have to be standing in Meaford to do.

Scarecrow Invasion and Family Festival

Every October, over two days. Scarecrows go up across town through September and October.

This year, our scarecrows are celebrating the 30th, according to the man who runs this site. That one is his word rather than a published figure, and it is marked as such here until somebody confirms it, which is the same rule everything else on Meaf follows.

The festival’s name was read off the banner on the green in Max’s own 360 footage from 22 September. The rest is from Roadside America, Bronze Scarecrow in Scarecrow Capital. The recording says Schubert throughout, because that is what a transcriber hears. It is Schubird.
