The men of Meaford and St. Vincent Township

Remembrance

Forty three names are cut into the stone on Nelson Street. This page exists so they can be read without standing in the cold.

The cenotaph

A bronze soldier with a rifle in his left hand and a grenade in his right, by Nicolas Pirotton, cast by the Allis Chalmers Company of Toronto in 1924. It stands at 12 Nelson Street East, Meaford.

The figure is reported to have been modelled on Thain Wendell MacDowell, who was awarded the Victoria Cross at Vimy Ridge on 9 April 1917. That is how Veterans Affairs records it, and it is worth saying that his own record puts his birth in Lachute, Quebec and his upbringing near Brockville rather than here. The modelling is reported. The local connection is not established.

THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE 1914 - 1918

The register states 45 names and prints 43. The 43 that are printed are above. Two men are unaccounted for between those two numbers, and that gap is left visible here rather than rounded away, because somebody’s family would want it chased.

Plaques for the Second World War and for Korea were added later. One from 1984 reads: FOR YOUR TOMORROW WE GAVE OUR TODAY.

Names transcribed from Veterans Affairs Canada, Meaford Cenotaph, not from a photograph. If one is wrong here it is wrong on a page about the dead, so tell me and it gets fixed the same day.
